Frequently Asked Questions
How can I permanently get rid of weeds?
There are a few easy solutions to removing weeds in your front or backyard. Let’s start by covering off with the top 5 solutions that don’t include pulling those nasty weeds out with your hands!
Solution 1: Boiling Water: Simply pour a kettle of boiling water over the weeds! It will kill them quickly and also has the added benefit of killing ‘weed seeds’. The only downside with this approach (aside from the mild danger factor associated with handling boiling water) is that there is no efficient way to cover a large area of weeds with boiling water. Unfortunately, that may take a few refills of your kettle.
Solution 2: Mulch! You can cover the top of your garden soil with a layer of mulch (available from your local Bunnings or Mitre 10) to help block weeds from growing. The best approach here is to use two or three inches of shredded bark, wood chips, gravel, dirt, rocks or even straw as your mulch base. Using mulch has the added benefit of keeping moisture in soil, so your garden will stay fresher for longer and require less-frequent watering!
Solution 3: Soap-Spray: Create your own soapy-spray-solution! What you’ll need is a bottle of dishwashing detergent (liquid soap or similar will be fine), a spray bottle (you can find these at your local hardware store or possibly even a supermarket), and water. Simple mix together 5 tablespoons of dishwashing detergent with 4 cups of water in the spray bottle. Give the mixture a good shake together, head outside and start spraying those weeds.
Are dead leaves harmful to plants or soil?
The answer to this question depends on which way you look at it. Leaving piles of dead leaves collecting on your lawn or plants can block out the natural sunlight. Grass depends on sun rays to grow and survive, so it’s best to avoid any unnecessary buildups of dead leaves for this reason. Otherwise you may end up with some unattractive patches of damaged grass.
Dead leaves can also act as an ingredient in a great compost, which is a better natural fertilizer than most chemical fertilizers. A good compost nourishes plants, helps to preserve moisture in the soil, attracts worms, helps to prevent disease and facilitates weeding.
To summarise, if the dead leaves are for aiding with the composting process, then go right ahead! Otherwise, rake them up from your lawn and add them into your compost pile.
How expensive is landscaping?
The cost of landscaping your front or backyard really depends on a number of factors. These factors include the yard size being landscaped, if you decide to hire professionals versus taking a DIY approach, the materials cost (such as elements, feature-pieces, paving, trees, etc), location and of course the time involved are all necessary of your consideration.
Before we get into all of this, a good place to start is just to understand your landscaping budget. This will change per household, but a general rule of thumb is to allow 10% of your home’s value for landscaping. To give you an idea, if your property cost you $500,000 to purchase, then a landscaping budget of $50,000 is reasonable. While this may seem like a lot, keep in mind that investing in professional landscaping will greatly add to the value of your property.
Do I need a gardener or landscaper?
Firstly, we need to understand the difference between a gardener or landscaper. Once we do, you’ll have a clearer idea of which one is the right choice for your current needs.
Gardeners: A gardener is responsible for the maintenance, health & well being of plants, lawns and gardens. They are usually employed to ‘look-after’ a garden that has already been created. Gardeners are also a great choice if you’re looking to have your garden brought-back-to-life in a horticultural sense.
Landscapers: A landscaper is viewed as the architect behind a great garden design. If you are looking to have your garden completely redesigned, or if you’d like to remodel a new feature or pathway installation for example, then a landscaping professional is best suited for the job.
